Responsibilities: attendance . uniforms . dues AttendanceOur troop meets weekly on Wednesday evenings and boys are encouraged to attend. Scouts are expected to arrive on time and arrange to be picked up promptly. Parents are welcome to stay. There is usually one or more outdoor activities per month such as a hike, weekend camping or backpacking trip. In the spring, our troop attends our district's Camporee, which is a weekend campout in which troops compete with each other in games and skills. It is a popular event at which Scouts can earn recognition as a patrol and as a troop. Troop meetings prior to this and other outings often concentrate on planning and skills related to the upcoming activities. And each summer, there are two one-week sessions at Camp Wolfeboro, our Council's Boy Scout summer camp. See our activities page for more detail. It is important for first-year Scouts to attend as many activities as possible—particularly Camp Wolfeboro. These outings are an opportunity for the boys to bond with their patrol members and fellow Scouts, building friendship and loyalty—frequently, rank advancement or merit badge requirements can be completed. Scholarships for Camp Wolfeboro are available. UniformsNew Scouts will be presented with a troop neckerchief, shoulder loops, the World Crest of Scouting, an 80-year bar, our troop numbers and the Mt. Diablo Silverado Council patch. Class A uniforms are required for Courts of Honor and specified community events, such as flag raising. Class A uniforms consist of an official Boy Scout shirt, pants or shorts, belt and socks, a neckerchief, and a slide of the boy's choosing. Scouts are encouraged, but not required to wear Class A uniforms to weekly meetings. The minimum uniform requirement consists of a Boy Scout shirt tucked into jeans or khakis, and a neckerchief and slide. The troop maintains a uniform box that contains outgrown shirts, pants and shorts. It is located in the troop's closet at the Scout Hut. DuesAnnual dues are $55 and are paid in the fall. Announcements will go out when dues are payable. This covers troop insurance, its obligation to Council, and the cost of badges and awards earned by the Scouts. The troop, alas, cannot run on dues alone. Each year the Scouts sell Christmas wreaths to raise money for both the troop and for the Scouts, themselves. The Scouts can apply their earnings toward camp fees. We also have several smaller fundraisers during the year, including See’s candy bar sales in the winter and small novelty sales at the Solano Stroll. Scouts who attend High Adventure camps often defray costs by holding other kinds of fundraisers, such as car washes. The troop uses the money it earns for the purchase of troop and patrol gear. |
